Today the letter about our Apple Unit is coming home with your child. I did make a couple changes, however. As a grade level, we have decided to extend our Alphabet Unit one more week; therefore, we will begin our Apple Unit the week of September 19th. This will give us more time in the classroom to focus on letters and sounds as well as more time to make preperations for all of the upcoming apple activities.
Hello everyone! I hope everyone is having a great week so far!
When you check your child's folder tonight, you will find several papers in there from me. One is an alphabet chart for you and your student to do toghether. This is a project that is meant to be fun for you and your child. As the note explains, just send them back when they are completed. There is no rush. Take time to explore the alphabet with your student and enjoy! When they are returned, the student will get to share their chart with the rest of the class. I also sent home the order form for school pictures. Picture day will be September 29th so please try to return those by the 27th at the latest. Another item I sent home that does not need to be returned is a copy of your student's beginning of the year assessment. This was just for me to learn where each student is at so we can proceed accordingly in is or her education. This was not for a grade, it was simply informative. I wanted you as parents to have copy of it as well so you could see your students strengths and weaknesses as well. Tomorrow I will be sending home a note regarding our upcoming Apple Unit. This unit is always a lot of fun for the kids! We get to cook, taste, and experiement with apples, but I could really use some help from families when it comes to providing some supplies. The note that will be sent home tomorrow will give a list of items we will need for some of these projects. Theheck anything you would be willing to provide and return the slip of paper to school by Friday morning. All donations will be greatly appreciated!!! We started Writer's Workshop this week and the students are loving it. Yesterday, they wrote their first story and got to share it with their friends. I was extremely impressed with the details in their stories. Right now, we are focusing on getting our ideas down on paper, so if all you see in your child's writing is pictures, it is okay! Ask them to tell you the story that goes with it. All of the stories were excellent! Today we discussed how to use our writing supplies and the kids decorated their Writing Folder to make it their own! Today we finished making our Mostly Me books and our Kindergarten Friend books. All of the kids worked VERY hard on both of these books and are very excited to show you on our Kindergarten Open House. Kindergarten Open House is scheduled for September 22nd from 6 to 7 pm so mark you calendars! At the Open House your student will give you a tour of the building and share with you several of the things they have been working so hard on these first few weeks of school. Cookies will be provided, so mark your calendars!
I am going to post a video in the Reading Corner tab of our blog. It is called From Head to Toes. We read this book written by Eric Carle and then watched a video of the book put to song. The kids loved it so I told them I would put it on our blog so they could watch it at home! :) Next week, we will be taking a close look at the alphabet and doing several fun ABC projects! In writing, we will also be starting Writer's Workshop, so be sure to ask your students about that! Have an awesome weekend! Hello everyone! I can't believe how quickly this week has already gone. I just wanted to give everyone a quick update of the happenings in our classroom.
Yesterday, we started a program call Rocket Math. This is a school wide program and is from 2:50 to 3:20 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. In the older grades, this program allows students to build fluency with math facts such as addition, subtraction multipication, and division. At the Kindergarten level, it of course looks a little different. Currently during Rocket Math, we are working on recognizing and writing numbers correctly. Towards the end of the year or when the students are ready, we will begin to integrate addition into Rocket Math. At the current time, however, it is wonderful to have an extra 30 minutes a day to focus on our numbers. By the end of the year each student will be expected to write their numbers correctly to 20 and recognize numbers all the way to 30. You can provide extra support at home my practicing number writing and recognition a couple times a week. Today, we a video of the book Chrysanthemum and then we counted the letters in our names and created a graph. We learned that Ben had the shortest name, Kayleigh had the longest name, and most people in our class had 5 letters in their name. If you ordered books from the September book order, they were sent home with your students today. It is always fun and exciting to get new books! Enjoy reading your new books with your kiddos! What a busy week we had in Kindergarten! We wrapped up our colors and shapes theme today by reading Little Blue, Little Yellow and then mixing blue and yellow playdough to see what the outcome would be. The kids loved it! This week, we also read The Shape of Things and made pictures out of certain shapes that we will be turning into a class book. We also read 7 Blind Mice this week and retold the story by drawing the colored mice in the book on elephants!
Today, we also had our first Weekly Reader which teaches us different science and social studies concepts. We will do a new Weekly Reader every Friday. The focus of today's Reader was Animals at the Zoo. I'm letting the students keep these in their book boxes to read at The Daily 5 and Rest and Read until next Friday. Next week our theme will be All About Me. We will be reading lots of fun books and making some of our own! I uploaded a podcast in the Reading Corner tab of the book Hooray for You! Check it out to get an idea of what next week is going to be all about! I hope everyone has a relaxing three day weekend! See you on Tuesday! |
